This flag is believed to be designed by&nbsp;New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson.&nbsp;The first version of US Flag has many names such as - "Grand Union Flag", "Continental Colors," "Congress Colors," "Cambridge Flag," and the "First Navy Ensign."

Over the years, the design of the flag evolved. In 1818, a law was enacted to establish the flag with thirteen alternating red and white stripes, with a white star added for each state in the union. Therefore, the design changed with addition of each new state in union.

Currently, the flag displays 13 stripes (7 red stripes with 6 white ones) and 50 stars, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies and the current states of the union, respectively.

The US flag follows specific dimensions outlined by executive order. It maintains a length-to-height ratio of 10:19. Also, its dimensions should be in direct proportion to the height of the flagpole it sits on.

Don’t we all enjoy drawing? The feeling of putting a pencil on paper to draw feels absolutely amazing! Not just for drawing, pencils are essential for writing as well. But do you know everything there is to know about pencils? There are many interesting facts about pencils, from their invention to their types.

There are also many things to consider before buying pencils. And, I am going to share those in this article. So, read on!

Before we directly jump onto pencil types, let’s see what pencil lead is and what is it made of generally.

Leads are the core of any pencil. Pencil lead is made of graphite, and <a href="https://uwaterloo.ca/earth-sciences-museum/resources/detailed-rocks-and-minerals-articles/graphite" target="_blank">graphite</a> is made of layers of carbon. Though the primary element is graphite, it’s actually a mixture of grounded graphite and clay powder, which is encased in a small covering over it. The case can be either a wooden or metal barrier.

Now let’s have a look at different types of pencils.

Of all the different types of pencils, these are the most common.&nbsp;These are made of a mixture of graphite and clay, encased in a wooden covering over them. These are also known as wooden pencils. You can find these pencils in any art supply store.

With the same features as graphite pencils, woodless pencils don’t have any wooden case covering them. Meaning they are just solid graphite sticks! Therefore, these are often called “solid graphite” pencils. These are mainly used for sketching.

As the name suggests, these pencils are made of charcoal. They are typically wrapped in wood or paper. They are available in different tinted colors too. Charcoal pencils can be used for writing and sketching.

Carbon pencils are made of a mixture of clay and a black pigment (lamp black). To change the darkness level, a combination of charcoal or graphite is used in these pencils. They are great at blending smoothly, but the marks are quite difficult to remove.&nbsp;&nbsp;

These pencils are also known as “pencil crayons” and are made with color pigments. You can find three types of colored pencils- wax-based, oil-based, and watercolor pencils. Erasable color pencils are also available. You can remove the stroke if you make any wrong one. These are commonly used for fine arts and kid’s drawing.

These are made of wax and the leads are wrapped in paper. Another name for these pencils you might hear is China marker. Grease pencils are perfect for writing or marking on almost any surface. They can also be used for drawing purposes.

These are pencils having graphite cartridges within a metal or plastic frame. The structure of a mechanical pencil looks quite similar to a ballpoint pen. Leads are replaceable in mechanical pencils.

They are designed to push the lead bars through the end of the frame hole to replace them with new ones. Used for writing mostly, the best part is that mechanical pencil doesn’t need to be sharpened like traditional wooden pencils.

Graphite pencils are also graded and categorized according to hardness levels. There are four major types of pencils we can see–Hard (H), Black (B), Hard-black (HB), and Firm (F). All these four types vary in terms of the degree or intensity of the stroke they make and are classified by numbers. For example, 2H, 3H, 2B, 3B, etc.

There are also some other pencils, such as carpenter pencils, golf pencils, and stenography pencils. These have a specific purpose, and you can easily guess that by their name.

As mentioned earlier, pencil lead is a mixture of grounded graphite and clay powder. Mixing these is necessary because it helps to create different kinds of pencils. The more clay the mixture has, the lighter the stroke of the pencils. And this is where the hardness scale came from. On the HB scale, H stands for hard, and B means black.

So basically, lead hardness means the degree or intensity of the color, quantity, or extent of usage a pencil could produce. Here is a chart of the lead hardness of different pencils.

There are no standard pencil dimensions or standard size for pencils. Sizes vary depending on materials, brand, or manufacturer. So there is no fixed length for pencils.

On average, a new, unsharpened, standard wooden pencil with eraser measures about 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) in length. And, the standard length of mechanical pencils is around 7 inches or 18 centimeters.&nbsp;

This also varies from brand to brand. For example, the most popular brand Faber Castell’s 90003 brand pencils are about 6.8 inches (17.5 centimeters).

The weight of any pencil varies depending on its length, diameter, materials, and manufacturer or brand. As there are no standard pencil dimensions, weight is also not fixed for any pencil standard size.

But there is always a standard dimension worldwide for a standard wooden pencil. Generally, a regular, unsharpened number 2 (HB) pencil weighs between&nbsp;5.5 - 10 grams (0.2-0.35 ounces). While mechanical pencils with metal casings are much heavier than this. In general, mechanical pencils weigh between 20 - 40 grams (0.7-1.4 oz).

Pencils are usually hexagonal, so diameter might not be the best word to describe its thickness. This width or thickness is the first thing that you feel when you hold it in your index finger and thumb. Hence, you may feel a bit uncomfortable at first if you change your pencil's brand and switch to a larger or smaller diameter pencil. As pencils don't have a standard diameter across all brands, this is more common than you realize. &nbsp;

The diameter of a pencil lead usually ranges from 0.2 millimeters to 5.6 millimeters. And the diameter of a standard pencil is 7 millimeters (0.28 inches).

Primarily, a regular wooden pencil is made of wood and graphite. Graphite is used for the leads and wood for the case.

Other types, like mechanical pencils, are made of graphite with metal frames. Regular color pencils are made of either wax or oil with color pigments.

It depends on how and for which purposes you are using the pencil. Pencil grade and shade level are important things to consider. For example, if you need a drawing pencil, you must use softer pencils for shading. In that case, B-grade pencils will be a better option to choose from. You can start with 2B or 3B pencils if you are a newbie. The higher the B the better it is for broader shading.

If you are looking for precision and light shading you need H grade pencils. The harder the lead,&nbsp; the finer the output.&nbsp;

For regular purposes, any average-grade wooden pencils will be fine. H and HB pencils are more than enough for construction purposes to draw dimensional lines or lettering. Here's a summary:

Highlighters are markers with special ink that are visible when writing over any existing writing. These are also known as fluorescent markers. We generally use these markers to highlight important passages of texts. They make our notes pointier.

With a variety of shapes, colors, and tip dimensions, there are so many types of highlighters. That you might get confused about choosing the right one. So, here is a guide with all the important facts about highlighter sizes that might help you in making your decision a little easier.

Highlighters come in a variety of sizes and types, just like <a href="https://www.measurementof.com/everything-there-is-to-know-about-pencils" target="_blank">pencils</a> do. Primarily, these variations are based on the structure, inks, colors, and tip shapes. The three main highlighter kinds are ink type (liquid), gel, and wax (pencil).

Some of the common highlighters we use and see are described shortly below.

The most commonly used highlighters are the jumbo highlighters. These are the large highlighters within the thicker barriers. They can create large and thick outlines. However, they can be a little hard to hold because of their thickness.

One of the popular brands for jumbo highlighters is Monteverde.

Compared to jumbo highlighters, pocket highlighters are tiny in size. With the shape of a regular pen, they are comfortable to hold and easy to carry.

These types of markers are made of ink-free technology. This gives it a bright, clear mark that doesn’t bleed through the paper. One of the most popular brands is Sharpie.

These markers have sparkles and shining (nontoxic ink) features to make the stroke glitter. They are great for marking on cards to make design or lettering arts.

These highlighters are made with any neon color. And there are tons of variations in these colors. The unique feature of multicolored highlighters is that we can get all those colors in a single highlighter.

You can also find highlighters that are erasable. Erasable highlighters work just like a pencil. If you make any mistake in your stroke, you can erase it to make a new one.

Like any other common item, highlighters should also be eco-friendly. That’s why different brands or manufacturers produce eco-friendly highlighters. These types of highlighters are made of ink and have paper barriers that can be recycled.

A pastel highlighter differs from a traditional highlighter. These provide a soft and light color tone. These highlighters are great for extensive underlines and facilitate comfortable reading, because of the lighter color tones.

These are simply combinations of highlighters and pens. These have features of narrow barrels and removable caps. Pen-style highlighters are more comfortable to handle.

Confused by all these types? Let’s look at the best features of each type of highlighter:&nbsp;

There are no standard dimensions for highlighters. Because different highlighters have different lengths, widths, and heights and are made of different materials.

For example, jumbo highlighters are shorter but wider. Pocket highlighters can be thinner but longer than jumbo highlighters. There are also pocket highlighters that are shorter than the jumbo highlighters.

Also, different brands have their measurement for their highlighters.

For example, yellow chisel tip highlighters are the most commonly used highlighters. Faber Castell has their Yellow Chisel Tip highlighter with a dimension of 6.69 in length, 4.72 in width, and 0.79 in thick (17x12x2 cm). In comparison, the same highlighter of the Sharpie brand has a dimension of 5.1x3.1x2.3 in (13×8×5.8 cm).

Highlighters come in many colors. Most of the time it’s yellow, pink, blue, green, or any neon color. But there are also others that have a more subtle color.

The tip of the highlighter is added to the top of the clear pen barrel. You might’ve heard another word for it, which is called “nib.” The ink flows out from tips (or nibs) when we use the highlighter. Tips are made of <a href="https://www.pslc.ws/macrog/pe.htm" target="_blank">polyethylene </a>or polyester beads (lightweight plastic).

Tip size depends on the type of highlighter you have. Tip sizes are measured in millimeters and range from 0.03 millimeters up to 50 millimeters.

Highlighters tips are available in four main types of shapes. I mentioned them below.

These types of tips are thick and flat-shaped. You can fully cover texts with little strokes and cleaned after highlighting.

This is the most common type of highlighter tip. These are as flat as window tips, but a little shorter. Chisel tips can make both thicker and thinner lines, commonly used in calligraphy and lettering arts.

Unlike the other rectangular highlighter tip, bullet tips are a bit rounded at the top, like bullet-shaped. Therefore, they are good for highlighting and underlining or circling texts.

Double-ended tips or dual-tipped highlighters have features of 2 different colored tips at the same time. So that you can easily switch up between colors without changing the highlighter.

Kokuyo Mark+ 2 Way Marker Pens are the most popular brand for double-ended tip highlighters.

Yes, highlighter tip shape matters. To make specific strokes of desired levels of shade, the shape of the tips matters a lot. For example, chisel tip markers are great for calligraphy and other forms of art that employ them. On the other hand, bullet markers have thinner tips. So, they are ideal for writing or coloring smaller areas.

This question has no obvious answer. Because it depends on the type and how often we use it. An average highlighter has around 0.33 ounces of ink (10 milliliters). If we use a highlighter regularly or every day, an average-size highlighter should last for about weeks.

If you buy a thicker one, it can last months. If you don’t use your highlighter every day, it might last longer than this. But remember, remaining unused for too long can cause them to dry up.

When looking for a highlighter, consider the ink type, the brightness level of the color, tip smoothness, durability, ergonomics (comfort level of holding it), intended use and price.

If you want a long-lasting highlighter to keep on, gel highlighters are the best. They don’t dry out as quickly as other kinds of highlighters.

While considering ink type, you should also take into account the smear level and bleed possibility of the highlighter. Gel highlighters take longer to dry and risks the printed text getting smeared. However, it doesn’t bleed to the other side of the page.

However, fast-drying highlighters with thin tips are the best option for study purposes. As our textbooks have many words close together, this will allow you to highlight specific sections without the ink bleeding through the paper of your books.
